Alter Eco

Alter Eco work directly with approximately 24,000 small-scale farmers in nine co-operatives, who grow rice, sugar and chocolate. They help the farmers institute Fair Trade and Organic practices and assist them in improving both the quality of food and quality of life. Alter Eco’s values extend to the flora, fauna and fields – working with their co-op partners to preserve heirloom grains, replenish and reforest the land.

One cocoa co-operative Alter Eco works with is Acopagro Co-op, located along the River Huayabamba on the edge of the Peruvian Amazon. The co-op, comprising 2,000 farmers, look on to a landscape that is very different today than it was 15 years ago. In 1994 a United Nations program made it possible for the farmers to begin replacing their illegal coca crops with cocoa, releasing them from an oppressive and volatile relationships with drug traffickers. Now they own and operate one of the most successful cocoa cooperatives in all of South America. In addition to the 100% fair trade and organic practices that have allowed them to build economic stability, the farmers are working on a zero carbon program to stabilise the land, with almost 1 million native trees planted and another million planned for the next 4 years. As well as the benefit of carbon capture, the planting of native trees helps to prevent big-picture climate change and helps to maintain the rainy microclimate so necessary for successful cacao cultivation.
