Madhya Kalikata Shilpangan (MKS) was founded in 1994 in the city of Kolkata, India. The company objective is to provide support for craftspeople and artisans by assisting with the marketing of their crafts so that better prices can be established. As well as this, MKS provides training to existing artisans and industry newcomers who want to further improve their income through the upgrading of skills.MKS
MKS has been actively engaged in promoting marketing of its target group's products on Fair Trade principles, developing communities for artisans and providing informal education and vocational training to them. MKS also keeps a vigil on ensuring that artisans receive fair wages by finding local, regional and international markets for their produce with transparency and social accountability.
At present, MKS is giving financial, technical and marketing support to 31 groups of artisans/entrepreneurs, largely based in and around Kolkata city in West Bengal, and Benaras in Uttar Pradesh. They are engaged in the production of a variety of handicraft items – ranging from silk weaving and printing to soft toys and articles made of leather. These can include ladies bags, purses, wallets, key rings, money boxes, Christmas cracker items, wall hangings, tea light holders, decorative items, games, musical instruments, and many others...
