Located in Kurunegala in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, Selyn is a fair trade hand loom company that manufactures and exports hand loom textiles and toys made from 100% natural cotton fabrics. Founded in 1991 by Sandra Wanduragala, Selyn started with 15 women in the village of Wanduragala in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka and has now grown to include nearly 1,000 members.
The tradition of the loom takes its roots at the very inception of Sri Lankan history. Today the industry faces decline due to various reasons ranging from the lack of skilled expertise, un competitive market prices, outdated designs and lack of infrastructure and technology. Selyn takes on this challenge to revive Sri Lankan heritage and extend fair trade benefits to the rural women and men of Sri Lanka.
With nine established hand loom and five sewing/handwork workshops in rural villages of the Kurunegala and Batticaloa districts, Selyn provide a creative space for men, women and youth from rural parts of Sri Lanka to engage their skills in a productive and efficient manner, helping them improve their living standards and become financially empowered.
Selyn believes in ‘teaching people how to fish’ and aim to invest in their members so they can stand on their own feet.
