Craft Resource Center

The Craft Resource Centre (CRC) is a World Fair Trade Organization, which assists informally organized artisan groups to develop self-sustaining businesses. CRC aim is to develop the artisan group’s economic self sufficiency by providing marketing, skills training, design, finance and exporting assistance. CRC supplies raw materials if needed as well as advance payment to artisans. A main focus is the linkages between groups that CRC facilitates and fosters, which in turn connect artisans to a broader community with in the CRC network and provides them with training, cooperation and information.

Starting with just a few artisans groups in 1989, CRC now works with 36 groups producing high quality leather, textiles, jewellery and embroidery. The number of CRC beneficiaries increase every year by new groups coming under its fold and older groups getting larger orders and impacting on a larger number of artisans. At present approx. 1000 people benefit from the direct or indirect involvement with CRC.

In the area of Corporate Social Responsibility CRC demonstrates strong commitment in working with recycled material and producing kantha stitched scarves from upcycled silk fabric.

CRC has also motivated all its production units to abide by the Standards of Environmental concern under Fair Trade. All printing units of CRC understand the need for efficient effluent treatment systems and have installed simple treatment units within their capacity. CRC invests a sizeable portion of its sales turnover in the capacity development of producer partners and staff by providing office skills training, English language training and conducting workshops for tailoring, leather, weaving, printing groups to acquaint them with new designs, right method of cost calculation or simply to brush up their knowledge about export procedures and Fair Trade.

Recently CRC started working in the slums of Howrah in West Bengal – training women of that area in crochet work, kantha embroidery, batik prints, bandhni art and tailoring. These crafts provide income for these marginalized women in these impoverished neighborhoods.

The CRC team’s faith in Fair Trade is unshakeable and its zeal to do something for socio-economic betterment of its marginalized craftsmen by structuring itself as a model organization and an effective intermediary in the Fair Trade export market has been remarkable.

Oxfam Trading has been working with CRC since 1993.
