Sheesham is a strong and beautifully toned wood abundant in India. It is part of the rosewood family, and is known by many names. Across India, you might hear it called shishan, sissoo or sisu. The Dalbergia Sissoo tree grows throughout the sub-Himalayan region, from the Indus to Assam.
Meaning “hope” in Sanskrit, Asha Handicrafts is a fair trade organization that has been working to promote the social and economic development of artisans throughout India for more than 40 years. Asha works with more than 50 producer groups and more than 1,200 makers across India. Asha means hope for hundreds of artisans who are given work through a nationwide network of producers all over India.
