The most popular baskets in our range, these 'collapsible' or 'belly' baskets, as they are sometimes known, are hand woven from seagrass using traditional Vietnamese techniques. They are strong, durable and an attractive, environmentally friendly solution to plastic bags when heading to the market. They are also a wonderful decorating item around the house - use them for your indoor pot plants, or storing kids toys or linen.
There are many collapsible baskets now on the market, but our genuine fair trade baskets are made lovingly in the Ninh Binh Province of Vietnam. Seagrass grows in fields close to the shore where the it is watered with the tides. It takes roughly six months for the seagrass to grow to around two and a half metres in height, at which point it is ready to be harvested. After air drying, and hand dying with AZO free dyes the strong even blades are woven into these beautiful and functional baskets.

Mai Vietnamese Handicrafts
Mai Vietnamese Handicrafts was founded in 1991 by a small group of social workers in the efforts to help poor and neglected children who could not afford to attend school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Mai provided work for the youths and encouraged them to attend the informal literacy classes which the organisation offered. Nowadays, school is free to all Vietnamese children, so Mai now provides work for the mothers and older sisters of these children, boosting the family income, independence and overall well-being.
