Ma’s Foods was founded in 1986 as a micro industry in Dambulla, Sri Lanka. The company began with spices and gradually increased it’s product range to include jams, chutneys, pickles, curry pastes, spice mixes, pasta, pasta sauces and flour. MA’s now employs over 200 people across the entire manufacturing process and is a leading firms in Sri Lanka’s food processing industry. In 2006 MA’s began to produce coconut milk which is processed in the company’s new factory in Minuwangoda.
MA’s has demonstrated a strong commitment to the betterment of the community they work with and the sustainability of the environment. In1990 they constructed the ‘MA’s Village’ – a worker residential facility which includes single and family living facilities, a modern cafeteria, a staff laundry facility and a play ground. The company is deeply committed to the principles of Fair Trade and is uncompromising in its responsibilities to the community having supported 35 small scale farmers gain organic certification in 2005.
MA’s offers a range of employee welfare support in the following areas:
Financial support – financial assistance to support home improvement, children’s education or other family welfare related areas ability. All employees receive school books for their children.
Study support – for employees who require financial assistance or additional leave consideration to enable further study
Maternity Support – for support during and after pregnancy. This incorporates a career allowance available to factory workers residing on site and a new born savings account establishment.
Exceptional Circumstances – Special financial and leave allowances for major Illness, weddings, funerals or other exceptional circumstances
Support is also given to farmers (particularly in the establishment of sustainable agricultural practices) primarily in the Matale district with spice farmers. Support includes helping farmers apply and obtain small business loans, obtain organic certification and provide agricultural pest and agronomic assistance.
