Nook Nook = Much Fun ( in Thai).
Nook Nook is a Thai family business, based in Chiang Mai, which started with handmade silk products since 2002. However, the collapse of the silk market led the two sisters Saipin Vanichmongkol & Ying Sainumphang to rethink their production with a focus on cotton textiles and toys. This allowed for the whole workforce to be retained. In 2009 Nook Nook was born from a creative collaboration between designer Craig Anczelowitz with the two sisters and a talented and creative team of Karen hilltribe craftswomen, who have learned this elaborate hand stitching and embroidery early on and are very skilled in the textile sector. Many of them are migrants from China and Burma. The fabric of Nook Nook are all made from salvaged or upcycled cotton in a patchwork style and allow the artisans a fair income, with fun at work.
Nooks Nooks message to the world is making quality handmade kids items, working inaccordance with fair trade principles and providing social support to create change.
Nook Nook currently employs 100 Karen hilltribe artisans based in the mountain villages around Chiang Mai and 13 in house staff involved in quality control, packing and administration.
The organisation offers skills training workshops, interest free loans, healthcare provision and paid leave schemes. Salaries are above minimum and over time and holiday times are paid 1.2 or 2 times above the normal rate and a yearly 13th month bonus payment. Nook Nook is contributing to employees’ pension funds and the official 30 public holidays annually are remunerated.
A portion of the company’s proceeds goes to the world's first elephant hospital in Lampang, Thailand. This helps sick and injured elephants to recover again in order to survive in their natural environment.
