Patagonia Water Glass - Set of 2 in Gift Box$29.95
Started in 2010 by college student Oscar Munoz in Santiago, Green Glass is all about saving the world one recycled bottle at a time. Bottles are collected from the trash, washed, and transformed into cool upcycled products as drinking glasses and wine glasses. Green Glass’ goal is to save as many bottles as possible, and spread the anti-garbage pro-recycling message all over the world. The industry price for recycled glass in Chile is significantly below the value of the raw material which leads to glass not considered worth recycling – hence it ends up in landfill. In Chile 100,000 people are involved in the waste collection activities, an important yet undervalued work.
Green Glass’ commitment to tackle the waste problem which is a global problem they started working with a large group of collectors and recyclers. The main centre is run by the Villalobos Family who employ around 20 people at the centre and work with an additional 50 independent collectors. The final production of cutting, fusing, etching, and packaging is done at the Green Glass workshop where another 10 people are involved.
Oscar had learned fair trade business principles and practices from his parents, whose craft business Calypso Glass Fusion has been a WFTO member for many years and he is well poised to carry the fair trade principles which under pin this inspiring and aspiring enterprise into the future. Within the last 5 years Green Glass has already received a number of awards.
Green Glass is a B Certified company which means they meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Today, there is a growing community of more than 1,600 Certified B Corps from 42 countries and over 120 industries working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business.
Green Glass pursue a society that respects everyone in the environment, people, animals, plants, and the earth itself. As a group of dedicated human beings, Green Glass recycles by example. They aim to make the world a better place by taking action and making sustainability a priority.
Oscar: “We couldn’t miss the opportunity of being a B Corp– the coolest entrepreneurial and corporate movement that looks after the world and its future. We believe B Corps understand the core of business and sustainability. We also wanted to challenge ourselves and hold ourselves to a higher standard."
When Oxfam started trading with Green Glass their aim was to save at least 1 million bottles, and so far had saved 60,000. The count is continuing, one bottle at a time.
