Established in 1992, Bali Zen was created to showcase the local talents of Indonesian artisans through the export, product design and development of traditional handicrafts for Western markets. Employing 15 in house personnel, and working with eight groups from villages around Bali, Bali Zen works to support sustainable community development. Through the creation of beautiful home-ware products and global marketing, Bali Zen has become a successful fair-trade organisation who works to benefit not only its artisans, but also the environment.
Bali Zen’s products are hand-crafted by village artisans in Indonesia, and are made with organic cotton and locally sourced bamboo. Products in the range include cushion covers, home-ware textiles, children’s plush toys, aromatic soaps and products inlaid with beautiful capiz shells.
Through the use of organic cotton, Bali Zen are doing their part to help support farmers whose crops have not been genetically modified or had chemicals used to enhance their growth. Bali Zen’s conscious decision to use organic cotton for their textiles shows their commitment to the environment, as organic cotton has such a low-impact on the environments biodiversity.
As Organic Cotton is grown and produced using such a sustainable and clean process, more nutrients remain in the soil, helping to reduce soil erosion, and water sources are protected as there are no chemical contaminants in surface runoff. The artisan’s of Bali Zen also wrap their gentle soaps in beautifully coloured organic cotton pouches, which are made using environmentally friendly vegetable dyes. All the other products involving material produced by Bali Zen are coloured similarly with this dye.
