The Pottery is an artisan run pottery workshop just north of Bogota in Sopo, Cundinamarca – an area which derived its name from an indigenous expression kundur marga, meaning condor’s nest.
Founded in 1983 by British–born artists Paul and Dione Gervis. Initially it was a potter’s studio in their home with Paul throwing and decorating most of the pieces himself and Dione hand painting large plates and producing press moulded, honey glazed slipware. From the start the emphasis was on producing a high quality product with a distinct personality and their beautiful hand thrown and exquisitely glazed wares are a wonderful testament to their commitment and skill. Glazes are hand mixed to create the wonderfully rich tones and depth of colour. The high firing makes this stoneware ovenproof, microwave safe and durable for everyday use.
In 2007 The Pottery was transferred into Colombian ownership and with initial technical help from Paul they are running now an independent workshop, providing technical training, health care and savings and small loans provision for the 7 women and 6 men who are involved with the production.
The Pottery also buys products locally mostly from artisans. The company sells these products through its own stores in Bogotá and three other cities.
